Before & After
I hear many times people say that their short haired dogs do not require grooming. I do agree that they need much less grooming than long haired dogs but they still shed their fur, get dirty coats, feet and ears and need their toe nails and paw pads clipped and cleared for good mobility and hygiene and so a good de-shed groom every couple of months can really make a difference to the amount of loose fur in your house and the dogs overall well-being.
This lovely Whippet enjoys a regular 2 monthly de-shed with a soft rubber zoom groom followed by a hydrobath and Pet Therapy Essential Oil Spa Sponge Treatment, leaving a beautifully clean, clear coat and skin and glossy finish. Full details of the types of essential oil Spa sponge treatments available are detailed on the pamper page of the website.

A lovely example of handstripping on a 2 year old Wire Haired Hungarian Visla. The coat had never been stripped and so a patch test was carried out on a small area to ensure that the coat would strip easily, there would be no bald patches due to the hair follicles not being regularly cleared and also that the dog was comfortable with the process - which as you can see, this fine young dog took too very well. This took 3 hours to strip the coat down all over on a large dog but the result was a lovely smooth, healthy, live coat for summer as all the dead hair had been removed. Also great for heat control on a very active working gun dog.

The owners of this lovely 4 month old Miniature Schnauzer puppy wished to have the option to show the dog at a later stage and so handstripping the coat to preserve the texture and salt and pepper colour was essential from the very first groom. If the coat is clipped at this stage, it is very difficult to get this back to its natural state and texture so care needs to be taken to make the right grooming decision.

Bailey is a 20 month old working Cocker Spaniel with a lovely fine silky coat. As he had not been groomed before, the best choice to preserve the texture and colour of the coat was to handstrip. This involved carding our the coat with special carding knives and then pulling the long remaining hairs by hand so the coat sits flat. His ears were combed through with a banded comb to remove loose hair. The process takes a little longer than clipping but preserves the coat texture and colour. The result is a lovely glossy natural looking coat that does not go fluffy in between grooms. Bailey also had overgrown feet and so these were trimmed into a 'natural' style, taking care to remove any matts in between the toes and as his leg feathers were very fine, these were lightly trimmed. Bailey on his second visit found the whole experience of the rhythmic hand stripping and a touch of Reiki very relaxing - so much so that he fell asleep and had a snooze.

Poppy is a very active cockapoo with a loose coat on the body and poodle woolly legs. As such a short and sporty teddy trim makes daily home grooming easier and allows Poppy to keep cool when dashing around whilst still looking cute and fluffy. A very sensible style for an active cockapoo and owners with limited time.

This cockapoo puppy with a very poodle wool coat is in a longer teddy trim. If the coat type is to be styled into this length, it is important that the owner thoroughly brushes and combs the coat daily to prevent painful Matts and felting and maintain the coat correctly. A groom cycle of every 4-6 weeks is recommended depending on season coat growth rate / lifestyle/ home maintenance frequency.

This Labradoodle presented with very bad matts all over due to a missed groom appointment. Unfortunately due the severity of the matts, there was no option but to clip off the coat and start again. The dog was much happier with his matts removed and in 8-12 weeks, the coat will grow back and can be styled into a short teddy trim.

English springer spaniel - breed styling. The soft muzzle restraint was used on the first groom as Max is a rescue dog and it was unclear how he would react to grooming. Following several trips to the Salon Max not longer needs the restraint as is very happy to be groomed and is very well behaved, enjoying the fuss and pampering. A real success story.

A 13 year old very overgrown border terrier black roan has its jacket hand stripped and thinners used on its legs, head and tail. Due to being an older dog, consideration needs to be given to minimising grooming time as they find it difficult to stand for long periods. Also the coat is more difficult to remove and so thinners help reduce time and discomfort or skin reactions.

This 15 year old Shelti, had a very heavy coat with 2 seasons of undercoat growth that required removal. The groom involved thorough brushing to remove the loose undercoat, washing and careful blast drying so as not to create matts in the undercoat, following by more brushing. The result was a lovely flowing double coat and heat control re-instated for the dog.

Cockapoos can be groomed in a longer coat length if they are brushed and combed out daily to ensure matts and felting does not occur. This is a commitment by the owner and it is recommended they have a suitable lifestyle that allows this time commitment in order to maintain the coat correctly and on a 4-5 week groom cycle.

This blue roan cocker spaniel was in need of grooming and had bad matts and a heavy coat. The coat and ears were clipped into a spaniel pattern and the matts removed. Clipped spaniel coats get very fluffy in between grooms and it is important to brush daily to keep the free of debris and dirt which creats matts.
